AIK Study with Muhammadiyah Philanthropy Theme

Yogyakarta, July 17, 2025 — The Postgraduate Program of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) once again held the Al-Islam and Muhammadiyah Studies (AIK) program as part of its efforts to strengthen ideological and Islamic values within the academic community. This study session focuses on the theme “Muhammadiyah Philanthropy: Its Role and Challenges in Nation-Building” and is attended by master’s and doctoral students, as well as faculty members and educational staff within the Graduate School.

This online event, held via Zoom Meeting, featured Mukhlis Rahmanto, Lc., M.A., Ph.D., Head of the Sub-Directorate of Da’wah and Internalization of Islam and Muhammadiyah, as well as a lecturer in Islamic Economics at UMY. In his presentation, he explained that philanthropy has been an integral part of the Muhammadiyah da’wah movement since its inception. Concrete examples of this philanthropy are reflected in the establishment of educational institutions, hospitals, orphanages, and social programs that reach all segments of society.

However, he also highlighted various challenges faced by the philanthropic movement today, such as digitization, transparent and accountable fund management, and the need for regeneration of cadres with strong ideological commitment. He emphasized the importance of innovation in social fund management and cross-sector collaboration to maintain the sustainability of Muhammadiyah’s philanthropic movement amid the dynamics of the times.

The Dean of UMY Postgraduate Program, Prof. Erna Rochmawati, S.Kp., MNSc., M.MEd.Ed., Ph.D., stated in her speech that this study is part of UMY Postgraduate Program’s commitment to building scientific character in line with Islamic and Muhammadiyah values.

The event closed with an interactive question and answer session that demonstrated the high enthusiasm of the participants. This study is expected to strengthen the academic community’s understanding of the importance of philanthropy in national development and motivate them to actively participate in Islamic-based social movements.
