Family Gathering and Reflection of the Postgraduate Program in the 22nd Anniversary

The Master of International Relations (MIHI) Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) held a gathering event involving staff and faculty members of the MIHI Program, as well as students. The event took place at the Banyu Mili Restaurant, located on Jl. Godean, Nogotirto, Gamping, Sleman Regency (16/11).

This gathering event is an annual event. It aims to strengthen relationships between students of different generations and as a forum for providing suggestions to the study program so that there is synergy that has a positive impact on the progress of the study program in particular. There were four student generations present at this event, from the 10th to the 14th generations. Lecturers represented by Dr. Ahmad Sahide and Dr. Ali Maksum, Ph.D provided some advice to the students regarding the students’ needs in the academic field.

“The graduation requirements for MIHI students are getting tougher compared to last year. This year 2019, MIHI obtained A Accreditation. With the increase in accreditation, as a graduation requirement, students are required to publish in accredited journals and participate in proceedings,” explained Ahmad Sahide. This should not be seen as a burden, but rather as a challenge for students to have competitiveness when they later enter society.

On another occasion, Ali Maksum also shared his experience when studying for his master’s and doctoral degrees in Malaysia. An expert is seen from his works. S2 students are expected to be able to determine their own expertise and skills. This can be realized through written works and theses that they will discuss. These themes will be discussed in the form of journal articles, books, and research, and the output will form expertise later.

In a question and answer session, there were some inputs from students. Meilisa, a 13th-generation student, suggested that there should be a maximum of one day’s notice when the teaching staff cannot teach in class. This is intended so that students can know the information so that they do not need to come to class. Most S2 students work while continuing their studies, so information about postponed or canceled class schedules can make it easier for students to arrange their schedules.

In this gathering event, the chairman of the MIHI student corps of the 11th generation handed over his responsibilities to the next generation. Dolly Harahap as the chairman of the MIHI student corps of the 11th generation handed over the position to Yuni Permatasari of the 13th generation who was appointed as the chairman of the MIHI student corps through a valid vote.
