IPR & Patent Workshop for Postgraduate Lecturers

Yogyakarta, May 15, 2025 – In order to increase the understanding and capacity of lecturers in the field of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), the Postgraduate Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) held an IPR & Patent Workshop for Lecturers on Thursday (15/05). This activity took place in the Postgraduate Director’s Conference Room and was attended by lecturers from various S2 and S3 Study Programs.

This workshop presented speakers from the Directorate of Innovation and Downstreaming of UMY. The material discussed included the basics of IPR, types of intellectual property, patent registration strategies, and the practice of writing good and correct patent documents.

In delivering the material, the Director of the UMY Directorate of Innovation and Downstreaming, Dr. Ir. Novi Caroko, S.T., M.Eng., conveyed the importance of lecturers having knowledge and skills in the protection of intellectual works, especially in the era of accelerated research and innovation. Novi explained that there are two copyrights, namely IPR and Patent; written works, artworks, photography, musical compositions, audio-visual works, choreography, recording works, and other works that need to be protected.

The participants also had the opportunity to consult directly on their potentially patentable research ideas. This workshop is expected to encourage an increase in the number of patent applications from academics and create a culture of innovation on campus.

This activity is part of the university’s strategic program in supporting research downstreaming and strengthening the competitiveness of lecturers at the national and international levels. (SN)
