Islamic Politics Department Organizes a Workshop on Intellectual Property and Patent Drafting

The Islamic Politics Study Program at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) Graduate Program held a workshop entitled “Intellectual Property and Patent Drafting” on Saturday, January 19th, at the K.H. Ibrahim Building (UMY). The event aimed to enhance innovation and legal protection for intellectual property.

Dede Mia Yusanti, Director of Patents, Integrated Circuit Layout Designs (ICLDs), and Trade Secrets at the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP), mentioned that Indonesia’s patent growth is reflected in the Global Competitiveness Index 2017-2018, where Indonesia ranked 36th out of 127 countries.

She continued by expressing concern over the low awareness of patent rights among Indonesian industries, particularly local ones. This is unfortunate because patent protection significantly impacts the nation’s economy, especially in the digital age.

In contrast, foreign companies dominate patent filings in Indonesia. In 2017 alone, out of approximately 14,000 applications, only about 15% were domestic. Therefore, raising public awareness about patent rights is crucial.

Yusanti emphasized that various educational and research institutions should prioritize innovation and consider patenting their innovations. She highlighted that innovations, even simple ones, can be valuable if they benefit society and are commercialized.
