On Wednesday, November 23rd, the Graduate Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), in collaboration with the Ahmad Syafii Maarif School of Political Thought and Humanity (ASMSPTH) UMY and the Doctoral Program in Islamic Politics and Political Science (S3 PI-IP), held a seminar commemorating the first anniversary of Buya Ahmad Syafii Maarif, focusing on the themes of humanity, Indonesian identity, and Islam. This offline event was held at the 4th-floor Amphitheater of the UMY Graduate Program and was attended by approximately 140 participants, including UMY undergraduate and graduate students, Muallimin teachers, media representatives, and Islamic organizations. The event was opened by the Director of the UMY Graduate Program, Prof. Ir. Sri Atmaja P. Rosyidi, M.Sc.Eng., Ph.D., P.Eng., IPU., ASEAN.Eng.
During this offline event, the UMY Graduate Program, ASMSPTH UMY, and S3 PI-IP invited speakers who were closely associated with Buya Syafii Maarif to deliver presentations on the chosen themes. The speakers included Dr. H. Hamim Ilyas, M.Ag (Chairman of the Majelis Tarjih and Tajdid of PP Muhammadiyah), who discussed Buya Syafii Maarif, Islam, humanity, and nationalism; Dr. Adib Sofia, S.S., M.Hum (Lecturer of Sociology of Religion at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta), who presented on Buya Syafii Maarif, Islam, and women; and Erik Tauvani Somae, S.HI., M.H.I (Lecturer at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan), who spoke about Buya Syafii Maarif and his humanistic side as seen by the younger generation. The seminar was moderated by Prof. Dr. Zuly Qodir, M.Ag (Director of the Ahmad Syafii Maarif School of Political Thought and Humanity, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta).
Dr. H. Hamim Ilyas, M.Ag emphasized that continuing Buya Syafii Maarif’s struggle would be easier compared to the challenges faced during the Prophet’s time. He expressed his hope that the Ahmad Syafii Maarif School of Political Thought and Humanity at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta would be able to carry on Buya Syafii Maarif’s legacy in all aspects.
Dr. Adib Sofia, S.S., M.Hum highlighted that Buya Syafii Maarif’s writings typically encompassed three key themes: advocacy for humanity, gender perspective (particularly in everyday life), and the example of a modern Muslim (with Buya himself serving as a role model for modern women).
