Lecturers and Educators Must Be Responsive and Critical to Information on Social Media

Dr. Zuly Qodir saat memberikan materi di hadapan dosen muda di lingkungan Universitas Islam Indonesia

As reported on the official website of the Doctoral Program in Islamic Politics and Political Science, Dr. Zuly Qodir, M.Ag, the Head of the Doctoral Program in Islamic Politics and Political Science at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), delivered a material in front of young lecturers in the Intensive Al-Quran and Hadith Studies and Intensive Islamic Da’wah Studies (SIAH-SIDI) on Wednesday (8/1) at the Auditorium of Universitas Islam Indonesia. The event was themed “The Role of Da’wah in Addressing Social Conflict”.

He explained that the socio-religious condition filled with hoaxes on social media and hate speech can occur due to the political interests of certain groups. As lecturers and educators, lecturers who also serve as religious teachers or preachers must be critical of the conditions they face.

Furthermore, he stated that lecturers and preachers should not act as spreaders of hoaxes, slander, and fake news that can divide the Muslim community. The presence of fake news must be balanced with the provision of accurate and unbiased news and information. If this continues, then lecturers as educators and preachers have played a negative role in building the nation and enlightening life in the future.

He also emphasized that lecturers and preachers must clarify the information they receive, not just spread it even if it comes from a prominent and highly educated person.
