On Friday (17/03), the Graduate Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) held the first semester lecture of the 2022/2023 academic year. This first lecture was held for the first time with 13 UMY Graduate Programs, including two new programs: Master of Civil Engineering and Master of Accounting. The first lecture was held offline at the 4th Floor Amphitheater of the Graduate Program, inviting Prof. Dr. Irwan Abdullah as the speaker.

Dr. Titih Huriah, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.Kom, the Deputy Director for Human Resources and Finance of the UMY Graduate Program, opened the first lecture by introducing the profile and regulations of the UMY Graduate Program to new semester students. Dr. Titih Huriah said, “With the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum that has been implemented in the UMY Graduate Program, both at the Master’s and Doctoral levels, publication is one of the requirements for students to graduate. Lecturers and students can remind each other to write publications.”

After the presentation about UMY Graduate Program by the Deputy Director for Human Resources and Finance, the first lecture continued with a material presentation by Prof. Dr. Irwan Abdullah and moderated by Dr. Ahmad Sahide, M.A. Prof. Dr. Irwan Abdullah is a Professor of Anthropology at Gadjah Mada University and is also a lecturer in the Islamic Political Science-Political Science Doctoral Program at the UMY Graduate Program.

In his presentation, he stated as a basis for thinking that structural power forms cultural uniformity (homogenization) that oppresses differences. The diversity of Indonesian culture has been tainted by the development of logocentrism, which manifests itself in static, monotonous, and closed thinking, attitudes, and actions. Logocentrism has become an instrument that dominates the thought process, a way of thinking, behaving, and acting that is totalistic, hierarchical, and oppositional. “The existence of diversity is threatened by the processes of technologization, mechanization, informatization, and mediatization, which are major transformations in forming a cosmology, values, and social order that is homogeneous and antisocial,” said Prof. Dr. Irwan Abdullah.
